Arthritis Pain Relief - What is Arthritis

The first step in looking for solutions to your arthritis pain problem is to understand how arthritis works.  Knowing more about arthritis will help you relieve your arthritis pain.  Arthritis pain relief  is the goal - understanding  arthritis is the way to get there. Once you become informed you'll be able to plan an arthritis treatment program, natural treatment or conventional treatment or a combination of both.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common form ofarthritis. Scientists now believe osteoarthritis results from a combination of genetic abnormalities and joint injuries. In osteoarthritis, any one or more affected joints experience a progressive loss of cartilage,  which is the slippery material that cushions the ends of bones.

Osteoarthritis is a chronic disease of the joint cartilage and bone, often thought to result from "wear and tear" on a joint, although there are other causes  of arthritis such as congenital defects, trauma and metabolic disorders. Joints appear to be larger, are stiff and painful and usually feel worse the more they are used as the day progresses.

As a result of all this, the bone beneath the cartilage undergoes changes that lead to bony overgrowth. The tissue that lines the joint can become inflamed, the ligaments can loosen, and the associated muscles can weaken. The sufferer experiences pain when the joint is used. Besides humans, most vertebrates suffer from osteoarthritis, including porpoises, whales, and the now extinct dinosaurs.

Unlike some other types of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis does not spread through the entire body (systemic.) It concentrates in one or several joints where deterioration occurs. Osteoarthritis affects joints in a different way depending on their location in the body, causing various symptoms. Another form of arthritis is psoriatic arthritis.

Arthritis is usually found in joints of the fingers, feet, knees, hips, and spine.

Sometimes arthritis occurs in the wrist, elbows, shoulders, and jaw but you generally don't find it there.

I hope this information was helpful in understanding  osteoarthritis (arthritis), and why arthritis pain sets in.  It'll help in your ongoing search for arthritis pain relief.  It's important to stop thisarthritic process to ward off the ongoing damage and resultingarthritis pain, that makes you seek out arthritis pain relief.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is traditionally considered a chronic, inflammatory autoimmune disorder that causes the immune system to attack the joints. It is a disabling and painful inflammatory condition, which can lead to substantial loss of mobility due to pain and joint destruction. RA is a systemic disease, often affecting extra-articular tissues throughout the body including the skin, blood vessels, heart, lungs, and muscles. About 60% of RA patients are unable to work 10 years after the onset of their disease.

The name is derived from the Greek. Rheumatos means "flowing", and this initially gave rise to the term 'rheumatic fever', an illness that can follow throat infections and which includes joint pain. The suffix -oid means "resembling", i.e. resembling rheumatic fever. Arthr means "joint" and the suffix -itis, a "condition involving inflammation". Thus rheumatoid arthritis was a form of joint inflammation that resembled rheumatic fever. Rheumatoid arthritis appears to have been described in paintings more than a century before the first detailed medical description of the condition in 1800 by Landre-Beauvais.
